Bamboos are some of the most versatile and resilient grasses. They are easy to grow and maintain because these plants demand little care and fuss. They grow up fast like lawn grass and they benefit from simple watering and fertilizer applications. Once the bamboo has achieved its top mature size, which takes about ten years, it then becomes even easier to grow.

Bamboos do not require much fertilizer and watering when mature enough. Some species are even drought tolerant. They also benefit from a wind screen and some light

shade when first planted as well. This is especially true of the smaller variety, though some species like the Fargesias, Thamnocalamus and Sasas can grow well with a lot more sun. In fact, the Fargesias and most Thamnocalamus are grown better with some shade during the middle of the day when it is hottest.

Aside from watering and fertilizer, bamboos greatly benefit from pruning, which most owners forget to do. Bamboo plants grow by producing new canes every year, usually in the spring. Some tropical species of clumping bamboos produce new canes later in the summer. These canes grow very fast in just a month or two. On the third month, the canes will start branching and leafing out like asparagus shoots. Each cane grows as much as it can in a short period of time and then the growth abruptly stops. In the next few years, each cane will only continue to branch and leaf out at a slower rate. As the canes grow even bigger, they can now begin to produce new and larger canes each year, after which the “mother” cane will age and finally die.

Placement is also important when determining where to position your bamboo shoots. You should always remember that most large bamboos grow faster and healthier in full sun. Fargesia and Thamnocalamus are the hardiest kinds and can be planted without the fear of uncontrollable spreading. Other bamboos spread by their underground rhizomes, so barriers need to be set up to limit their growth. A barrier 40 mil in thickness by 30 inches deep of HDPE (high density polyethylene) to control their spread usually does the trick.

Most bamboos grow extremely well in a moderately loamy soil that is slightly acidic. If your soil is quite heavy, you will have to add some organic materials. These materials can be dug well into the soil where the bamboo is to be planted. It is also recommended that you mulch the area well and let some earthworms do the work for you before you plant your bamboo. You don’t need to spend for mulch. Any organic material makes good mulch and grass preferred because of its high nitrogen and silica content. Hay is good also but it is often a source of weed seeds, which can be a future problem. Any kind of manure is good as long as it’s not hot. Limit the use of chicken manure for bamboos. Chipped trees are also good for bamboo growth.

Bamboo is a forest plant and it grows better if mulch is maintained over the roots and rhizomes. Do not rake or sweep up bamboo leaves that fall off the plant. These can keep the soil soft and moist. The leaves also recycle silica and other natural chemicals that are necessary for bamboo growth.

annuals in summerAnnuals are a delight to the gardener and to those who view the garden. They provide bountiful color and fulfill many gardening functions. Annuals can fill in with quick growth and colorful flowers while perennial and foundation plantings take time to grow to their mature sizes. Annuals can provide foliage and color around bulbs before they bloom and fill the space after the bulb flowers are spent.

Annuals are easy to grow from seed. A gardener can grow many inexpensively. Try out various color combinations and types in your garden. There is an annual for just about any gardening use you may have.

But to start with annuals, you may wish to know a bit about the basics. This begins with knowing the difference between tender, hardy and half-hardy plants. Just what do these mean?

Tender annuals are usually plants that come from tropical and subtropical environments. They will not tolerate any frost at all and must not be set out in the garden till after the last frost is past. Many will not tolerate temperatures below about 50 degrees. If you wish to add these to your gardening efforts you must either start them indoors before the last frost or buy them as transplants. Transplant them out in the garden after all danger of frost is past. They will not last long in the fall garden once the night time temperatures begin to drop.

Hardy annuals can tolerate some frost. They can be direct seeded into the garden as soon as the you can work the soil to provide the correct seedbed. A gardener may even plant their seeds in the fall for early growth the next spring where there is a mild climate. As they tolerate some frost, they are a good means to extend your gardening efforts in the fall. They will not shrivel up at the first frost.

Half-hardy annuals are plants that will tolerate just a touch of frost in the garden. Consider them somewhat between the tender and hardy annuals as makes sense. It is still best to set these out after your last projected frost date in the spring. An early light frost in the fall should not kill these allowing you to enjoy your gardening efforts for a longer spell.

The mention of palm trees immediately brings to mind images of long afternoons by the beach with the gentle swishing of fan-shaped leaves as they sway in the sea breeze. Palm trees are indeed found in coastal regions and in tropical climates. But did you know that there are at least 2500 species of palms in the world, and that a good number of them can be grown in our homes?

You can grow palm trees in your backyard like more and more people are opting to do. The palm tree’s ability to withstand extreme temperatures and their obvious tropical charm has made them favorite backyard plants in many less-urban parts of the United States.

Palm trees are best described as tall trees with the leaves and the fruits crowning over their long trunks. Belonging to the scientific family called Palmae or Arecaceae, they are mainly identified by the fan or feather-like leaves they sport. Most of the palm trees in the United States are cold hardy and are found in mainly southern California, Florida and Mexico. The hardiest palm trees that can withstand extreme winters are found much further north.

Widely used for ornate decorations, many species of palm trees are now commonly found in the United States and are not native to the country. They have been imported from different countries and naturalized. For example, the Chinese Fan Palm, the Brazilian Queen Palm and the Triangle Palm from Madagascar, are now found in Florida. Though there are drought hardy palms and cold hardy palms, cold hardy palms are best suited to American climatic conditions. Needle palms, Mediterranean fan palms and Butia palms, can withstand temperatures as low as -25 degree Celsius and -12 degree Celsius and thrive in American homes and farms.

tropical bushAlmost everyone who has seen parties in tropical regions would have yearned to throw or attend one such party. Tropical ambience has many attractive things to it - be it the many different types of plants and trees that give the lush green settings or the different types of beautiful flowers. Most of the tropical parties that are conducted in the evenings will have a set of natural lighting such as tiki torches, which complete the setting.

Tiki torches are the best bet to get the natural setting of a party in the tropics. They are small and controllable. Tiki torches can be easily set in a matter of minutes and can burn for several hours. They can be easily extinguished and are normally safe when set up appropriately. Tiki torches can also be placed in patios, along swimming pools, garden walkways or in any outdoor area.

Titi torches come in simple or decorative poles that are about five feet in length. These contain a small reservoir on top. This top has a holder which can hold a bottle or can of fuel. The only fuel to be used with tiki torches is authorized tiki fuel. Some torches do come in options to burn with natural gas or propane gas. The bottle is fitted with a metal top that is normally black in color and has an opening in the middle to allow the thick wick which will be immersed in to the tiki fuel. The wick can be lighted using extended lighters that are available and the torch can burn for several hours.

Tiki torches also come with small safety caps. The torch can be extinguished by placing the cap over the torch. When the torch is not in use, the wicks can be pulled out and kept separately.

Several options are available when it comes to Tiki torches. The most popular and easily available ones are made of bamboo or cane that adds a touch to the tropical ambience. These are very cheap - less than 10 dollars each and are easily available in home improvement stores. Several more sophisticated designs are also available. If you are planning to use Tiki torches near the ocean at a beach house, you can get torches made of copper or brass that can handle the salty atmosphere well.

To install a tiki torch, all you need to do is push the poles of the tick torch which are hollow, into the ground. Many accessories are available along with Tiki torches to ensure safety and convenience. Sometimes in strong winds, the torch can fall over, since the top is heavy. PVC pipes can be used in this case. Pipes of larger diameter than the tiki torch can be first placed in the ground and buried either completely or until the required level and filled with dirt or salt. The torches can be pushed and installed inside the pipes rather than the ground. PVC or metal hats that can be fitted on top of the torches are available to avoid the torches being soiled and prevent birds from damaging the torches.

Tiki torches are great to add some fun to the environment. Ensure safety precautions like having a handy fire extinguisher nearby and purchase only certified torches and fuel, and stricly follow instructions.
